What started in Europe is now coming to the United States. Car sharing clubs pay annual fees to rent cars by the hour. A person can save money if they rent a car versus buy one, especially if they make infrequent trips.

"Frost & Sullivan calculates that a car owner doing 12,000 miles a year can save $1,834 by shifting to a carsharing service. So car-sharing will stimulate short-term demand for new cars while threatening a proportion of carmakers long-term sales."
