The first plastic, discovered in 1855, was composed from the cellulose in plant walls, as well as nitric acid. In 1907 synthetic plastics, know as Bakelite, were discovered and quickly proved to be much more cost efficient. Since then plastic has become one of the most commonly used materials in the world. From plastic jugs, and tarps, to plastic shrink wrap this durable and versatile material has become a staple of everyday life.
