Palm oil also goes by the names coconut oil and palm kernel and is derived from the fruits of palm trees. Palm oil is commonly used as a food ingredient in Africa, Southeast Asia and Brazil, because of its low cost and use for frying food. Palm oil was a major trading commodity during the time of slavery, because the oil would help lubricate industrial machines during Britain's industrial revolution. Palm can be used as a biodiesel, so production around the world is increasing due to alternative fuel demands; however, palm oil production is also contributing to substantial damage to the natural environment through deforestation.
