"As demand for skilled labor increases, there has been a rapid decline in skilled labor supply in the UK. This is due to a number of reasons, such as demographic changes, lack of students (particularly women), and lack of mobility within Europe. In addition, employers also claim that there is an apparent skill gap amongst the existing work force for certain occupations.The expansion of knowledge-based industries has raised the general demand for skilled workers across a range of sectors and occupations. The demand for human resources in science and technology has never been higher. Employment in these fields have grown twice as fast as overall employment between 1995 and 2004.
International competition and advances in technology force labor divisions to restructure in order to become more knowledge intensive. As a result of this change, demand for knowledgeable workers has not only become higher, but more broadly based. Employment in knowledge-based industries for the EU has grown by 24% from 1995 to 2004, compared to a total growth in employment of only 1.1%."
