Russia is a northern country that has a mixture of European and Mongolian inhabitants. The country was ruled by the Czars. The most famous Czars like Alexander and Catherine the Great were treated as divine due to their adopting the religion of the Orthodox Church. When the Bolsheviks took control of Russia, the Czar and his family were executed to deny the divine right of any ruling family in Russia. The United Soviet Socialist Republic became the official name of Russia following the defeat of Germany. The economic condition in Russia following the end of World War II was very difficult. The ruling party in Russia felt betrayed by their Allies in World War II, the United States and Great Britain. The hostility due to the near poverty conditions in Russia was blamed on the Allies determination to re- build the countries of Germany and Italy that were for the Russians, the enemies. For many years, the USSR dominated the world scene as a competing communist country and gained support from countries in Africa and from puppet regimes like Castro in Cuba. Russia and China, neighbors, were the biggest communist bloc countries in the world, competing for power and position in the world scene. With the collapse of the USSR during the administration of President Ronald Reagan, the USSR gave up control of its satellite countries in the Baltic and assumed its old name of Russia. Russia is the name of the country that was once a part of the USSR.
