S&P 500: A free-float capitalization- weighted index. When first introduced was known as the S&P 90 and now its index includes prices of 500 large-cap common stocks which are actively traded in the U.S. Has become the most widely followed index of large-cap American stocks. Index includes both growth stocks and generally less unpredictable valued stocks. Components of S&P 500 are chosen by a committee. The index takes into account corporate actions like stock splits, share issuance, dividends and restructuring events which keep the S&P 500 Index comparable across time. During trading sessions the index is updated once every 15 seconds. Investors may also purchase share of an exchange-traded fund (ETF).
