The Dow Jones Industrial Average, also called the Dow, Industrial Average, Dow Jones, Dow 30 or just Dow, is one of several indices created by Charles Dow, co-founder of Dow Jones and Company. It is a stock market index. The Dow is closely monitored for tracking targeted stock market activity. It is gauge largely to the American market however it continues to be influenced by both foreign and domestic political events. The Dow Jones is made up of 30 companies including Coca-Cola, AT&T, 3M and Wal-Mart. This index represents an average for the industry based on the performance of the stocks included in the index. As companies that are included are changed, adjustments are made to ensure the value of the index.
